Tires ?

Postby Lc82 » Thu Mar 07, 2019 11:03 pm

Looking to get a new set of tires for my 300 Xcw and was wondering what people are using ? I have tubliss and currently run Michelin star cross 5 tires soft front med rear. I mainly ride Calabogie. Heard good things about shinko or Dunlop would love some advice.

Oh no you didn't just ask that... let the games begin.

here's some links:

I ride with AT81 RC in the back and Maxxis Cross Desert IT for the front with tubeliss on both and they are awesome. I only ride calabogie and ride about 2 or 3 times a week. the front will last the full year and the back will almost last the full year.

At 81 RC rear. Mitas C-19 front (green stripe). Enduro mousse. Rear replaced in late August. Front when shredded! Moving from tubliss to not caring! In my experience it is not what you ride for a tire but, how you ride it!

Rear: (all 110/100R18)
At81RC is a good all around lower pressure (0-5 psi) run flat tire (it's 6 ply), but it's been pricey lately. Wears like iron.
Shinko 505s are similar to the AT81s, with better traction at low pressure (3-7 psi), but not a run flat tire, not as tough, not that great in mud, but ok. Cheap. Will wear faster that the Dunlops. Overall I liked them, but without run flat, I preferred the Ibex.
Ibex: best traction on rocks and roots, not run flat, can run moderate pressures (7-10psi) for full potential, clears mud pretty well, is a bit too plyable if you rail like motocross, wears like the Shinko, need to avoid tire spin to keep them healthy. the price for these is decent now, keeping them as my favs (great single track hard Enduro tire).

Front: currently playing with the Shinko 216s 90/90s, modelled after the Golden Tyre 216s, limited time in the fall, so far impressed. If you try the Fatty 100/90s, note that while they ride over anything and feel like you got a suspension upgrade, it will slow down steering, it hydroplanes, and hates deep narrow ruts (ie it hates Larose). I got used of the steering, but it is scary in the mud because it floats two much.
I hated the Mitas green stripe, never felt confident. I used to like the old Michelin S12 soft. Never tried the M59s, even tho it's the gold standard apparently.
