Trails and Trials Fun-Days at Terry's

Postby Terry » Mon Aug 29, 2016 10:35 am

- Next ride day(s), Saturday June 23 & 24, 2018 -

Features:
2.5 km of single-track trail, easy main loop with optional tighter trails
Trials riding areas with some big rocks to hop over
New riders can ride the lawn & practise going around pylons before hitting the trees
Technical help and tools & work space available
Limited trail bikes and riding gear available to borrow
Details:
Arrive after 8:30, engines after 9:00. RSVP if you plan to arrive after 1:00
Bring your quiet trail-bikes, trials-bikes, or mini-bikes. (Hand-guards are highly recommended)
I have a CRF150 and CRF230 to share, ...get your own once you're hooked
Bring sturdy leather boots and any off-road riding gear you can get your hands on. (Boots & helmet are required)
I have some extra gear to share: boots, helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, gloves, chest protectors, jerseys, riding pants
Trials riders are welcome but please prearrange a minder or riding buddy
Kids under 16 are welcome, supervision is your responsibility
Invite friends and family, all are welcome
Water provided, washroom available, bring a snack or a lunch

The trails are all single track packed into a 6 acre woodlot out back of my house. The goal was to create a place where young and new riders could learn and have fun, turns out its a lot fun for everyone, so long as the bike is not too big or heavy. The trails are just long enough and tight enough to get a good workout if you go fast, about 15-20 minutes to do a lap of everything. Log crossings are few and small to kept it small-wheel, and new rider friendly. There is a separate area now under construction for bigger technical challenges like jumps and log piles and a teeter-totter. it's located such that there is no requirement to ride these obstacles to get through the trail.

The ideal participant:
a) Someone that rides but has never ridden a trail bike
b) Kid or spouse of an experienced rider being introduced to the sport
c) An experienced rider that has discovered that this mini-trail stuff is a hell of a lot of fun!

Just 10 minutes north of Kanata, email me for the address
Hope you can make!

I just finished clearing a new segment of trail last night. This is part of an easier, much less twisty, path that will loops around the property. It's meant for larger bikes that don't fit the tight trails to well and it will provide a nice transition from lawn riding to tight trails for new riders. Looks like a nice cross country skiing trail too.
See you all tomorrow,

I see you created a new/beginner trail last fall.

Is it safe to assume it would be appropriate for newer riders?

The easy loop is the next place for beginner riders to try after getting comfortable going around trees or pylons on the lawn. It starts out at the back edge of the lawn and gently curves past the trials riding park. Stop and watch if you like. You then cross a 40 foot long wooden causeway made of old skids with an 24" wide plywood deck. Then, following the main corridor trail down the middle of the property, you're lead to a little clearing, situated about 1/3 of the way around the easy loop, here you can easily turn around and practice going back and forth between the lawn and the clearing, or you can keep going. If you keep going a few hundred feet later, the trail opens up onto an old tractor lane, If you like, this is a great place to practice wheelies or at least get up into 3rd gear for a second before going back into the single track. You are now about 1/2 way around the easy loop. The trail is still wide for a single track and the turns are gentle but increasing in number. All along this trail you will see lots of intersections. These optional trails are marked with colour coded trail tape. You are currently riding on the blue loop. As the blue loop comes to an end you are placed back on the main trail again where you can go right to go around again or left to cross the causeway back to the lawn. There are no steep hills or water crossings or mud holes or deep sand on the easy loop.

I like it. :)
But everything is on a small scale like a go cart track.
